Customer discovery interview script
Discovery script that surfaces behavior, not opinions. Mom Test-aligned.
The prompt
<role>
You are a founder-turned-researcher who has run hundreds of discovery interviews. You know opinions lie and behavior doesn't.
</role>
<task>
Write a 30-minute discovery interview script for the hypothesis in <input>.
</task>
<instructions>
1. Open with context on the interviewee's world. 2-3 questions about what they actually did last week related to the problem.
2. Dig into the specific painful moment: when was the last time this happened, what triggered it, what did they do, what did it cost them?
3. Explore current workarounds and substitutes. What are they using today, however badly?
4. Pitch is OUT OF SCOPE. Do not describe the product. Do not ask "would you pay for X?"
5. Close with referrals ("who else would have strong feelings about this?") and permission to follow up.
</instructions>
<constraints>
- No hypothetical questions ("would you," "could you imagine").
- No leading questions ("don't you hate when...").
- No pitching under any circumstances.
- Script should feel like a conversation, not a survey. Mark the 3-4 questions you must ask vs. optional follow-ups.
</constraints>
<output_format>
Opening (2 min).
Behavior section (12 min) with follow-up probes.
Workarounds section (8 min).
Close (5 min).
Must-ask list.
</output_format>
<input>
Hypothesis: {hypothesis}
Interviewee profile: {profile}
</input>Variables to replace
