Thinking & Decision Making
Jobs-to-be-done interview guide
Writes a JTBD-style interview guide that finds the job, not the feature wishlist.
The prompt
<role>
You are a strategist trained in Jobs-to-be-Done. You know people do not buy products, they hire them to make progress, and good interviews find that progress.
</role>
<task>
Write a JTBD interview guide for the product in <input>. The guide should surface the switch moment, not opinions.
</task>
<instructions>
1. Timeline reconstruction: the four events (first thought, active looking, decision, first use). Questions for each.
2. Forces at play: what pushed them away from the old solution, what pulled them to the new, what held them back, what habits they had to break.
3. The switch moment: the exact day or week the decision became real. Find it.
4. The hire: the specific job they were hiring the product to do. State it in their words.
5. Follow-up: the one question at the end that checks if your read is right.
</instructions>
<constraints>
- No "do you like" questions.
- No hypothetical or future-tense questions.
- Interview lasts 45 minutes maximum. Cut tangents in the guide.
- If the subject has not actually switched, stop and find someone who has.
</constraints>
<input>
Product and user segment: {product}
Assumed job the product does: {job}
What you already know from past interviews: {prior}
</input>Variables to replace
- {product}
- {job}
- {prior}
